You are the focus of my attention and I offer committed time to you on a regular basis. Your distress is my concern and I see my task as listening so that together we can deepen and understand what it is that troubles you. I hope to offer you a safe and confidential 'space' in which to give expression to, and to explore that which you are finding "puts you in a state". Whether you have experienced an unwelcome change or loss of a person; whether you are just experiencing what some call a 'midlife crisis'; whether you have looked at yourself and found that you are not quite what or who you thought you were, my time is yours for the asking. I hope we shall meet.

I have been working in mental health for over thirty years and qualified as a psychotherapist in 1985.

Since 1986 I have worked as a psychotherapist in institutional settings. I was a psychotherapist in the University of Sussex Health Centre psychological services for nine years, and in specialist psychotherapy posts in the NHS from 1996. I have extensive experience of a wide range of clinical presentations, of assessment for psychological therapy and supervision of psychotherapy. I have respect for different therapeutic approaches and for shorter term therapies. My interest in how relationships affect our well-being led me to further training in couple psychotherapy and therapeutic approaches drawing on attachment research such as mentalization based therapy (MBT).

I am interested in how therapy needs to be adapted to different situations to offer a safe and effective therapeutic relationship.

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice in Lewes and registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy.   Originally qualifying as a psychodynamic counsellor with the Westminster Pastoral Foundation then as a psychotherapist with The Guild, I now work eclectically within a psychodynamic framework.   My experience over the last 25 years has included short term focussed work within the NHS, in Lewes Prison and in Brighton University Health Service.

I now see young people and adults on an individual basis for both short and longer term sessions covering a range of emotional and mental health needs.  Of particular interest to me is the role played by creativity (in whatever form) within the healing process.

A long-term interest in Buddhist psychology influences my work.   I have run 'Mindfulness Courses' and consider of value the inclusion of the concepts of Mindfulness should it seem appropriate.

I also offer supervision within a psychodynamic framework.

Barbara Leon is an experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapist whose private practice is based in central Brighton. She was trained and subsequently employed for nine years by Westminster Pastoral Foundation in London as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and supervisor. This increased her interest in working within a culturally diverse environment of ethnicity, sexual orientation and the emotional issues pertinent to every age range.

She has worked at an NHS GP surgery in Acton, London. Additionally she was employed as senior counsellor and supervisor at  an alcohol agency. Here she worked with individuals, couples and facilitated groups for those who were alcohol dependent, their spouses and families.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy helps people understand and change complex, deep-seated and often unconsciously based emotional and relationship problems. In this way symptoms can be reduced and distress alleviated.

It is a means by which patients understand and can resolve their problems by increasing awareness of their inner world and its influence over relationships both past and present. The relationship with the therapist is a crucial element in the therapy. The therapist offers a confidential setting allowing unconscious patterns of the patient’s inner world to become reflected in his or her relationship with the therapist (transference).

This process helps patients gradually to identify these patterns and, in becoming conscious of them, to develop the capacity to understand and change them.

I have provided counselling and psychotherapy in a variety of settings since 2004.

I offer from 1-3 sessions per week at my practice in central Brighton. My therapeutic style is both supportive and challenging, and I endeavour to bring an analytic approach to bear on whatever issues you are seeking help with.

Aspiring towards a deep, lasting resolution of difficulties, this form of treatment relies on the development of a secure and rewarding therapeutic relationship, and aims to engage with the issues you bring in all their likely complexity. Because of this the therapeutic process can take time.

Our initial meeting(s) will provide an opportunity to think together about what analytic therapy can offer you at this point in your life.

My aim is to create an environment in which to understand the dynamics inside that are preventing you from living life to your potential;  to foster inquiry and curiosity into the origin of your thoughts and feelings.

Anxiety and distress can be caused by internal conflicts that haven't yet been consciously understood. Psychoanalytic work requires you to be curious about your thinking. Curiosity lessens anxiety. Anxiety, unchecked, is the enemy of curiosity. It asks you to bear uncertainty. In developing the capacity to think about your thinking, even when under fire from anxieties, the ability to feel emotionally alive can be retrieved. Seeing yourself in new ways can be immensely rewarding and have a lasting effect.

In the psychotherapy field I am what is known as a Jungian analyst, or analytical psychologist. It's hard to explain what this means in a sentence, but for me it means I approach a person's psyche with a deep respect for the totality of the unconscious.

I offer a confidential setting in which we meet for weekly scheduled 50 minute sessions. The aim is to bring about a greater degree of self understanding and deepened emotional awareness. You are free to reflect on whatever is uppermost in mind; feelings, thoughts, wishes, fears, memories and dreams can be explored.

A regular commitment of time enables the psychotherapy process to take place, and it can vary from a single consultation, to several weeks, months or even years. The process is sometimes gradual and open ended, so it should not be regarded from the outset as quick, and by implication requires financial and emotional investment.

We meet for an initial consultation so that you can tell me about what's upsetting you. There is no requirement at this stage to commit to further sessions, however it may take a few meetings to decide whether we feel we can work together. All sessions, including an initial consultation, are charged at my current rate. I review fees from time to time, and usually increase them in January each year.
