Arts Forum present Cinemas of the Mind
A collaboration between the Depot, Lewes and Psychotherapy Sussex.
We organise regular post-screening discussions of films which are of interest from a psychoanalytic standpoint, as well as from other perspectives. Events usually feature a speaker or panel discussion with Q&A.
Cinemas of the Mind has also collaborated with organizations such as the Duke of York Picture House, CINECTY, the UK Jewish Film Festival and the Brighton and Hove “Celebrating Age Festival”.
Cinemas of the Mind Club
Cinemas of the Mind Club, an addition to the main Cinemas of the Mind events, is a chance to meet informally on the first Monday of the month for a post screening discussion after one of the Depot’s regular early evening screenings.
We meet 15 mins after the film in the Studio at the Depot for about an hour. Feel free to bring a drink / snack in with you. These are free events but places are limited to 40.

The Salt of the Earth
Co-directed by his son Juliano Salgado, this fascinating documentary portrait traces the career of outstanding Brazilian photographer, Sebastião Salgado.
It spans 40 years of his work which took him around the world focusing on international conflicts, starvation and exodus, and natural landscapes both pristine and in decline.
On his return to his native Brazil, with his wife Lelia, they begin to reforest the land on his father’s ailing ranch and co-found the Instituto Terra.
Followed by a one hour post-screening Cinemas of the Mind discussion with Antony Penrose and Dr Francoise Hutton, chaired by Jenny Leeburn.
Antony Penrose is the son of Lee Miller and director of the Lee Miller Archives at Farleys House and Gallery.
Dr Francoise Hutton, a consultant psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist, worked for 10 years at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture where their garden and horticultural therapy programme is an important part of the service they offer.

The Price of Freedom
The Price of Freedom exposes the devastating impact of the political choices that this group of men took in putting their country first.
Whilst the country gained freedom the ‘foot soldiers’, as Mandela called them, continue to suffer the repercussions through to the present day.
The Maharaj family have courageously told their own story against the backdrop of the apartheid regime.
The film throws a light on the hidden world of post liberation trauma that is lived out daily in South Africa and mirrored by thousands of other families around the world who have lived through war and conflict.
Post-film Q&A hosted by Jenifer Leeburn (Cinema of the Mind) with director Polly Steele, also joined by Jo Maharaj via zoom. Audience members are also invited to gather in Depot’s Studio for further discussion about the topics raised in the film following the Q&A.
